The AKS-74U short assault rifle (the "U" suffix means"Ukorochenniy" in Russian = "Shortened" in English) has been developed in the late 1970s from the AKS-74 assault rifle because it was no worse than the competition in terms of performance, and promised significant production cost savings by utilizing existing equipment for the AK-74 line.
